Cessation of the pacifier sucking habit and self-correction of the anterior open bite in the primary dentition: case report

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of play strategies to break pacifier-sucking habit and induce self-correction anterior open bite in primary dentition. Methods: Data collection took place at Pediatric Dentistry clinic a public education institution. Three children, aged between 3 4 years old, using pacifier presenting with 2 5 mm bite, participated research. dental guidance was imparted educate family provide for child by means an illustrated book about fairy. Results: After first consultation, two children quit their habit. Subsequent consultations were devoted positive reinforcement follow-up bite. The third required four visits stop habit, but other habits persisted only corrected after intervention multidisciplinary team. Conclusions: receiving orientation from professionals, parents/guardians cooperated stimulating child, activities effective encouraging sucking on pacifier, permitting Bottle feeding, tongue interposition mouth breathing may hinder spontaneous correction is abandoned, requiring intervention.
